Holiday Brunch/Craft Donations

Both classes are still looking for donations for our holiday brunch/craft activity.  If you can donate (your time or an item), we would very much appreciate it :)

Mrs. Bush Sign Up Genius found HERE.
Mrs. Compau Sign Up Genius found HERE.

The holidays are coming up fast, and both classes plan on having a special activity on the last day of school (Friday, December 22.  For this day to be special for all, we're asking for some donations.  If possible, please sign up on the correct classes Sign Up Genius above.  In a nut shell, Mrs. Compau and Mrs. Bush will be providing muffins for a holiday breakfast, but we'll need some food donations for the rest of the breakfast.  In addition we will be doing a holiday craft that we could definitely use some parent help with :)  If you want to volunteer, please make sure you have a background check on file in the office.  Thank you in advance!

What's going on...

Math:  This week we worked on multiplying mixed numbers.  This builds directly on the previous lesson of simplifying before multiplying.  To multiply mixed numbers students have been following these steps:
1) Convert the mixed number(s) into improper fractions (there are still many struggling with this skills).
2) Simplify (if possible) before multiplying (if students do not know their division facts this is very difficult).
3)  Multiply
4)  Convert your answer back to a mixed number (if needed).
Students will have a quiz, and some workbook pages in their Friday Folder if you would like some ideas of problems to practice.  In addition to that, there is a HOMEWORK page that is DUE on MONDAY.

Science:  Students who did not score an 80% on their science test average spent this week working on a small extra credit assignment.  Several students are struggling to get this done.  The deadline is next Thursday.  Students who scored above an 80% average were able to learn about computer coding, snap circuits and other STEM supplies I received with a grant last year.

Reading:  The January reading calendar will be sent home next week.  Feel free to send the December one in after the break.

Language Arts:
All notes and the glossary should be finished for famous Americans except for the introduction.  We will be going over that next week.  Feel free to look over your child's notes anytime.  We will be needing a shoe box for a part of this project in January.  During the holidays, if you could set one aside that will be helpful.

SPELLING BEE IS TUESDAY!  We will be holding our bee in class on Tuesday during Language Arts.  The top two winners per class will participate in the school bee in January.  Words were sent home the first full week of December.

Social Studies:  The Exploration test is Monday.  We spent time in class at the end of the week reviewing and playing a review game.  The link to the vocabulary practice on Quizlet is below.  A copy of the study guide was sent home with the email today.

A note about Mrs. Bush's Replacement

Next Wednesday (12/20) candidates will be at school teaching demonstration lessons to both Mrs. Bush's and Mrs. Compau's classes.  Each demo lesson will last roughly 30 minutes.  After demo lessons are complete, the interview team (consisting of Dr. Horner, Mr. Bernard, Mrs. Bush, Mrs. Compau, 2 parents and 2 students) will have a brief meeting to discuss the candidates.  The top candidates will be asked back for an interview.  Our hope is to have a selection made by Friday, 12/22.  We will keep you as informed as possible throughout this process.  The first week after Christmas Break will be a transition week where Mrs. Bush will be working with her replacement so that they (and the students) are comfortable with the transition.  After that, Mrs. Bush will be in the building and willing to help in any way possible if her replacement (or you) have any questions/concerns.  Thank you again for your understanding :)

What's going on...

Math:  This week we worked on multiplying fractions.  We then built on to that concept by simplifying fractions BEFORE multiplying.  Students who know their multiplication/division facts are having a much easier time with this concept.  I cannot stress enough the importance of your child learning their math facts.  A video on multiplying mixed numbers is going to be due on Monday.  Before students can successfully multiply mixed numbers they must first be able to convert mixed numbers/improper fractions.  We worked on this in unit 1, but many students are still struggling with the concept.  Please practice this skill at home.

Science:  Science test scores will be coming home TODAY in Friday Folders.  You will find a test and a cover page.  The cover page has a percent from test 1, a percent from test 2, and an average.  The average is what you will find on Empower (our online report card).  Please ask if you have any questions.  Students who scored above an 80% average were able to learn about computer coding this week (it's Computer Science week).  Students who didn't worked on an extra credit project (smaller than the last unit), that showed their understanding of photosynthesis.

Language Arts:  Childhood and Adulthood famous American notes were due today.  We also took our first spelling test.  Your child already knows their score because we take it online and they see their results automatically.  They will receive a new list on Monday.

Students know if they are behind on their notes that they should be working on it over the weekend to catch up.

Social Studies:  We are continuing to learn about exploration and the impact explorers had on American Indians.  A study sheet will come home next week for a test before the break.

What's going on...

Math:
This past week we worked on extensions and retesting from unit 2.  In addition, we started unit 3, which focuses on mulitplying & dividing fractions.

Science:
We had our FINAL test in our Living Systems unit this week.  Next week look for a paper that will need to be signed showing your child's average for the unit.  If your child did NOT pass their assessment they will be working on an extra credit project next week.

Reading:
We have continued in our nonfiction reading unit.  We're learning about taking notes and synthesizing information.  We are using a notetaking strategy called "boxes and bullets".  All this work will be put into action when the students research their famous Americans.

Language Arts:
We started spelling homework this week.  I have had several students come in at recess if they didn't finish it at home.  Look for homework again next Tuesday and Thursday.  Also, please check the spelling of their words after their homework so they know if they spelled a word wrong right away.  Thank you for helping with this!

A note is in the Friday folder today about the Famous American project.  It needs to be signed and returned on Monday.  Also, we started taking notes on the childhood/early life of our famous American.

Social Studies:
This week we started our unit on Exploration.  We learned about what explorers took to and from the Americas.

Other "stuff" to be aware of...

Friday, December 8th has two exciting things happening.  First, we'll be having our first yoga session of the year.  5th graders received a grant which is allowing us to do some stress relieving yoga with an actual yoga instructor.  Mrs. Bush's class will be participating from 1:40 - 2:30, and Mrs. Compau's class will be from 2:30 - 3:20.  We have many yoga mats, but if you have one you'd like to send with your child that would be great!  Also, make sure they wear comfy clothes.  Please talk to them about the importance of taking this time seriously.

The second exciting (and sad) thing happening is that it is Mrs. Bush's student teacher's last day.  She graduates from Ferris State and we all wish her the best of luck.  She will still be a familiar face, as we've already lined her up to sub in the future :)

Upcoming Events

What's going on...

Math - We're wrapping up our unit on decimal addition, subtraction & comparisons.  Our test will be MONDAY!! Study guides went home in Friday Folders.  They are also due on Monday.  Our next unit will be on multiplying fractions.

Science - We learned this week about how animals get their nutrients.  We'll be testing the week after Thanksgiving break.

Reading - We are digging into our "Reading Non-fiction with Power" unit.  Much of what we cover in this unit will be applied to the student's Famous Americans project.

Language Arts - This week students selected their top 10 choices for who they would like to learn about in our upcoming Famous American project.  Their selections were due today, however, I will take them until Tuesday.  They were told to share the list with you so you know who they are thinking about for the project.  I also have included a letter about Spelling in the Friday folder today.  Let me know if you have any questions!

Social Studies - We took a test on Thursday and now are learning about what was going on in Europe before our unit on Exploration.

Baby it's cold outside...

Please send your child with appropriate gear for the weather.  Once it starts to snow, they will HAVE TO have boots AND shoes to wear in the classroom.

What's going on...

Math:  This week we worked on subtracting decimals, and using the commutative & associative properties.  In short, the associative property states that when you have multiple numbers you're adding, it doesn't matter the order you put the in...so 6 + 3 + 4 can be rewritten as 6 + 4 + 3...that should make for easier mental math.  That was a very simplified example.  The students are learning how that applies to fractions and decimals.  Next week we move on to rounding decimals, which is our last learning target of unit 2.

Science:  Students got an opportunity to see what plants need to grow.  We did an interesting experiment where we planted 4 pots of wheat grass.  Two of them were in the dark, two were in the light.  When we opened up the bags we discovered that the ones in the dark did grow...but they were yellow!  The look's on the kid's faces when they opened the dark bags was priceless!

Language Arts:  This week we finished practicing the sorts we will be doing for spelling.  We tried them with two different practice lists.  I did this so students will know what to do when they take lists home for homework.  We also started our unit on Informational Writing.

Social Studies:  Students received a study sheet for the Social Studies test next Thursday.  It is just like the last one!  Let me know if you have any questions!

End of Trimester/Report Card Information

The trimester ends on 11/15.  Report cards will go home 11/21 (Tuesday).  Parent logins and passwords will be coming home in your student’s report card. Please check outTHIS informational video for information on how to login.

We had a great time at our Halloween parties on Tuesday!  Thank you to all of the parents who helped with donations and in the classroom!

Reading-We are finishing up our unit on reading with power and will start our Informational reading unit next week.  October reading calendars were due this week and November calendars went home.  Thank you for supporting our reading homework!

Math-We spent this week finishing up comparing decimal numbers and adding decimals.  Next week we'll move into subtracting with decimals and estimating.  One important idea to remember when comparing/adding/subtracting decimals is to line the decimals up.  We got to listen to a song to remind us about that skill...the chorus was "line up the decimals like buttons on a shirt...".

Science-This week we started an investigation that will be ongoing to determine what activates wheat seeds.  We'll be growing wheat grass in class, and experimenting with it's location to see if that has an effect on how the grass grows.

Language Arts-This week we finished learning the sorts for our spelling lists.  We will be practicing one more time next week before we start sending lists home for homework.  I will also be sending an informational letter home next Friday about spelling.

Social Studies-Thank you to everyone who helped chaperone our trip to Blandford Nature Center!  The weather seemed to hold out for us and I have been able to connect the trip to our lessons in class.  A study sheet for our test on Native Americans will be sent home next week.

Halloween Parade/Costume/Sign-Out SOP
  1. Student costumes must fit OVER clothing and must be put on AT school at the teacher designated time. There is not enough time or space to send kids to the bathroom, so please try to abide by this requirement!  Students should be able to put on their own costume without assistance.
  2. Student costumes may not include any accessories that resemble weapons. Please leave these accessories at home.
  3. Please contact your child’s classroom teacher if you are planning to volunteer for a classroom party. Teachers will have the times and other details for parties. You must have an approved Volunteer Form in order to participate.
  4. Treats for class parties must come from the classroom teacher’s approved treat list.
  5. At 2:30 we will begin the costume parade. Parents who wish to watch the parade will wait outside the school in the circle drive. Students will exit the building through the K-1 wing doors, proceed across the front of the school, in the A wing (2-3) doors, where they will head back to their classrooms. Parents may line up in the circle drive to watch the parade.   Bush/Compau are the FIRST two classes, so be here on time or you might miss us!
  6. On this day, if you are taking your child home directly after the parade, you must sign him/her out with the classroom teacher instead of at the office.

What's going on...

Math - We're well into unit 2 with math.  Students are utilizing two new techniques/programs starting unit 2.  First, we're learning how to succesfully be a part of a math workshop.  The gist of a workshop is the students will get small group differentiated instruction with me (at the Meet with the teacher station), then an opportunity to practice their skills in three different ways (Practice Problems, Technology, Hands-on Games).  For the next couple weeks we're practicing what that will look like.  I will be emailing parents during this unit when there is an upcoming assignment.  Students will have an opportunity to complete it during Independent Work time (unless they've got other work that needs to be finished), or they can do it as homework.  The second new thing we'll be using is Empower.  Empower is where I house my entire unit of activities.  If your child is ever absent, please have them check Empower to see what they're missing out on (often times it can be completed from home).  IF your child can't access the videos using Edpuzzle, there are links to every video for the entire year on our "math" page of this website.

Science - If you haven't returned the form that has your child's test score on it, please do so ASAP.  I will use those forms to record our next score as well.  This week we had a few really fun experiments to help us determine what is needed for yeast to break out of its dormancy.

Language Arts - This week we wrote a personal narrative for grading.  This one had to be using everything they learned throughout all of the lessons and apply to a new piece of writing.  I look forward to reading them!  We also practiced our first word sort and went over some of the expectations for when we begin our own word lists.

Social Studies - This week we have been learning about the differences of the regions of American Indians in our country.  Our trip to Blandford Nature Center is on Monday.  We will be leaving school at 10:15 and return by 12:15 for lunch.  Make sure your child dresses for the weather!  Blandford does have ponchos for students if it rains.  Let me know if you have any questions.

What's going on...

Math - We have wrapped up unit 1 in math and are getting ready to move on to unit 2.  Students were asked to do their first video from home on Thursday.  I was hoping for two things to come out of that assignment.  First, I needed to make sure that students could access the video from home.  Second, I was hoping for them to get it finished so we could start in on the math in class on Friday.  I only got a few emails from parents that they had a hard time logging in.  Next week we'll be learning our "math workshop" model that we'll be using for the remainder of the year.

Science - We had our first science test this week.  Look for it to come home in Friday Folders today.  There will be a page that needs to be signed and returned on Monday attached to it.  If your child scored below an 80% on their test, they will have a mandatory extra credit assignment.  The extra credit is due on or before November 21.

Language Arts - This week we took a spelling assessment.  Because of this assessment, I will be able to group students so they have words at their level.  Next week I will share two different sorts and we will practice the sort activity with a generic list.

Social Studies - Retests for the Constitution/Bill of Rights test were on Friday.  I will check those over the weekend.  We also started our new unit on Native Americans.

What's going on...

Math - We are taking our FIRST test today (Friday).  I can't wait to see how much improvement the students have made!  Next week will be spent on reteaching (if needed), extensions (to challenge the kiddos who've got it), and introducing unit 2 (adding/subtracting decimals & place value).

Science - We finished up our first investigation in science this week.  Next week we'll do some review on Monday/Tuesday.  We're planning on taking our first science test on Wednesday!  Look for a study guide going home TODAY in Friday Folders.  The study guide is mostly vocabulary they need to know to be successful on their test.  The test is not a vocabulary test, but it is very important students understand what the words mean.  For example, the students won't be asked to define producer, consumer and decomposer, but they might be asked to look at a food web and label the producers/consumers/decomposers within the web.  There were two quizlets created to help kids study their vocabulary.  You can find them here and here.  Please encourage your child to study a little bit each night.  Study guides are due back on Tuesday :)

Language Arts - This week we finished revising and editing our personal narratives and were able to have some free choice writing time as the revising was taking place.

Social Studies - We took our first test on Thursday and I was very impressed with the amount of studying that took place.  Many students put in time at home to prepare and I'm sure it will pay off.  I will finish grading tests over the weekend.  Our next unit is on American Indians and how they adapted to different environments.  Blandford Nature Center slips and money are due by next Friday.  I have extras if you need a new one!

Halloween Party

HALLOWEEN PARADE SOPs- (Tuesday 10/31 at 2:30):  This year, we will circle the entire building (weather permitting).  Please remain outside for the parade.  All parents that will enter the building for any classroom parties MUST obtain a visitor’s pass, and at NO time are parents allowed to remove students from the parade.  If you would like to take your child home after the parade, please obtain a visitor’s pass and then sign him/her out in the classroom.  All the teachers will have a sign in/out log for the parties.  That is the way we are asking to guarantee everyone’s safety.  You do not need a pass if you are here for the parade as that is outside, and we ask that you remain outside for the parade.  In the case of inclement weather, we will move the parade to the gym.  Parents will sit in the bleachers and students will watch in the hallways.  Last, please honor our no-treat policy.  We will both be posting a signup genius for Halloween Party treats, so check for that next week.  Let’s have a safe AND fun Halloween!

What's going on...

Math - We're finishing up unit 1 next week.  We'll be taking our practice test on Tuesday.  Expect study guides to go home on WEDNESDAY with the students.  Study guides should be turned back in on FRIDAY the day of the test.  I will also send home some extra worksheets to help students study.  Those do NOT have to be turned in, they are simply there for your child's use, if needed.

Science - This Monday we made compost worm habitats, and it was AWESOME!  We'll be getting them out every few weeks to see if we can observe decomposers in action.  While we wait for the decomposers to do their job, we will continue to learn about food chains, predators and prey.  The 5th graders first science test will probably be in a couple weeks.

Reading - This week we talked about wise book choices and more strategies to read with powerful comprehension.  Remember that we have started the at home reading calendar for reading homework.  You should have an October calendar at home to keep track of reading.  Let us know if you don't have one.

Language Arts - This week we finished the many strategies for adding detail to our personal narratives and started typing them on Google Docs.  We will begin revising and editing this document and focus some time on verb tenses.  I will be giving a spelling assessment soon so I can see where students levels are with spelling.

Social Studies - Students have been given a study sheet for their first test on the Constitution and Bill of Rights.  The test will be next Thursday.  We will spend time reviewing for the test in class next week, but students should be studying their study sheet at home.  Let Mrs. Compau know if you have any questions.

Blandford Nature Center forms and money are due October 20.  If you are volunteering, make sure you have completed your background check form.

Upcoming Dates:

October 9 - Watch DOGS kick off - 6:30
October 13 - Hat Day - $1.00
