Reading: December reading calendars were due this week and January calendars were sent home before Christmas break. This is reading homework and is incredibly important so all students continue to improve their reading level. Thank you for supporting this at home! In Mrs. Compau's class we are finishing our unit on non-fiction text structures.
In Miss Francis's class we started the book Wonder for read aloud. The students seem to be really excited about reading this together! Wonder has great themes about friendship in school, so we will be doing some activities to go along with these ideas.
Math: In Math this week we worked on multiplying and dividing fractions. We are just finishing up Unit 3, so we will work on reviewing next week. A test will be coming up soon. I will send an email when I know the exact date that we will do the Unit 3 test.
Science: This week we started a new unit called Mixtures and Solutions. We have had a few experiments with creating and separating mixtures. The students seem to really enjoy working hands-on with the materials and are doing a great job with this!
Language Arts: This week we began typing our informational book about our famous American. Students are doing a GREAT job! I am so proud of them! A note went home in Friday folders about the trifold display board students will need for Famous American night in February. Please look for that and let me know if you do not get one. It is due back by next Friday.
We also talked about how to make the Time Capsule. I showed many examples and went over the direction page they have in their Famous American Enrichment packet. I also included a few pictures below so you can see examples of what they look like. Students are able to start working on this now. They will not bring it to school until Famous American Night, but they should not leave it to the end because they will make their display board at home too later and it is very overwhelming to do them both at the same time. I will bring some extra shoe boxes from home next week if you are not able to find one.
Students should finish their Time Capsule by Monday, February 5. I will send home a note for parents to sign that the Time Capsule and display board are finished before the big night to help everyone stay on track (we will talk about the display board directions later)! Let Mrs. Compau know if you have any questions about the Time Capsule!
Social Studies: We started learning about the first English settlements in the new world and the challenges they faced. Ask your child about the Jamestown Online Adventure they explored!
