What's been going on...
Math: This week we are finishing up our unit on multiplying whole numbers and decimals. We will be testing NEXT WEEK, so look for a study guide coming home on Wednesday (not our normal folder day). The kids are doing great! The common mistakes I'm seeing are remembering to put your decimal in your answer, and multiplying by powers of 10 (ex: 3.9 x 10² = 390)
Reading: With Valentine's Day and our Symphony trip this week, our reading block was a little scattered. We are continuing to work on understanding the characters in our books.
Science: In this week's investigations we were able to look at what causes things to melt. Our experiment involved candles, pebbles, chocolate chips and butter!
Language Arts: This week we worked on speeches we will be giving to the class on our famous American. This is different from the "spiel" we will say on Famous American night because that is much shorter! Students were assigned a day next week they will give their speech and they should bring their costume that day to give it to the class. They should also be practicing their speech at home so they are prepared. They have had time in class to work on a rough draft and the final on index cards. Most students finished their final draft on cards at school.
They should also be finishing up their boards for the big night on Monday, February 27! There is an itinerary for the night in the Friday folder. Please look at that this weekend and sign the portion at the bottom of the second page. Feel free to keep the itinerary and cut off the signature part when you send it back to school.
I have offered construction paper, glue, and time in the lab to print, last week and this week. I also have report covers they can use for their informational book so they can set them out on Famous American night. They don't have to use what I have, but they are welcome to. Thank you for all of the support you have given me and your child for this project!
Social Studies: This week we started work on a group project to learn about individual settlements.
