What we've been up to...
Math: We are now beginning our 3rd unit on multiplying and dividing fractions! Look for your child's unit 2 test scores in their Friday Folders.
Science: We are currently in between science units (we're waiting on our science kits for our Mixtures & Solutions). But have no fear, during our science time the kids got a chance to do a couple of things that really stretched their thinking! First, they got an opportunity to do an extra project from our last unit to help show they're now understanding photosynthesis. Second, if they were still struggling with unit 1 math skills (adding/subtracting fractions), they worked in small groups with me getting additional support. Finally, most students got a chance to celebrate computer science week by being introduced to computer coding. We used the site code.org, which has some great tutorials for beginning coders!
Reading: In reading we're in the middle of our non-fiction unit. The students are learning many different strategies to help them understand non-fiction. This week was kind of a "put it all together" week where they applied many strategies they've learned to new books.
Language Arts: This week we have continued working on our notes and started spelling homework. Most students did a great job remembering and sorting correctly! We will have homework next week Monday and Thursday instead of Tuesday because of the music program on Tuesday night. Their first test will be on Friday.
Spelling Bee: Our class spelling bee will be on Tuesday, December 20. Everyone participates, but those students who would like to study the words were given a list last week. I have extras in class if they lose theirs or need one and didn't take one originally. The top two winners in each of my Language Arts classes will participate in the school bee in January and receive a different list of words to prepare for that bee. Let me know if you have any questions!
Social Studies: This week students started working in small groups to learn about an explorer.
Christmas Party Information!
We will be celebrating on Thursday, December 22nd. We don't do a party at the end of the day because we buy pizza for our classes and need help earlier serving the food. Because of this, we shift our day around so our craft is in the morning instead of the end of the day. Students may bring a small picture of themselves they can use in an ornament they will be making (or they can just decorate that section). For this project, we could use any scraps of Christmas wrapping paper you may have sitting around the house. Feel free to send paper in any time before the 22nd.
As our gift to our students, we will be ordering pizza for them for lunch that day while they watch a movie. They may bring in a can/small bottle of pop to drink with the pizza. If you would like to donate paper plates, napkins, or a bag of baby carrots, please email your child’s homeroom teacher.
We are looking for a few parent volunteers to come in on Thursday to help with the ornament project and serve pizza. Please let me know if you are able to help out. We will be working on the ornament at 10:30 and then serving pizza at 11:30. You can stay until 12:00 or leave earlier if you need to. Let us know if you have any questions! Thank you!
