A note about 5th grade tests
What's going on...
Math - We've been working hard on learning how to add & subtract mixed numbers with uncommon denominators. This is a tricky skill that builds upon their skill of adding & subtracting fractions with uncommon denominators. We have one more target in unit 1 before we take our first assessment. So far students should know how to:
* find equivalent fractions
* compare fractions with uncommon denominators
* add/subtract fractions with uncommon denominators
* convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions
* add/subtract mixed numbers with uncommon denominators
Science - We've been doing a lot of work this week on food webs. Ask your child to explain what the arrow represents in a food web (hopefully they say the flow of energy)!
Reading - This week our reading block was abbreviated due to our extreme heat days. Students worked this week on setting goals during our reading time, as well as learning strategies for "picking up the pace" while reading. Both Mrs. Bush and Mrs. Compau continue to do one-on-one reading assessments with all 5th graders so we can get accurate reading levels.
The first "at home" reading calendar will be in Friday folders today. Students should be reading about 20 minutes a day at home and would then mark it or color the picture on that day of the calendar. At the end of the month please sign the calendar and send it in to school.
Language Arts - This week we added transitions to our personal narrative and also internal thoughts of the character (what we thought or how we felt about something). Next week we will be adding one more idea for details and then start typing the stories in Google Docs.
Social Studies - We started learning about the Bill of Rights. Next week we will continue to learn about them and a study sheet will be passed out for the first test.
A note about our first field trip to Blandford Nature Center is in Friday folders today. Parents are welcome (make sure you have filled out background check forms). The trip will be in the morning on Monday, October 30. Look for more information in Friday folders and let Mrs. Compau know if you have any questions!
