At Kenowa Hills, we want every one of our students to truly feel like the sky is the limit. That no dream is too big. That they are entering a school community that encourages and supports them to chase after their dreams.
What's going on...
Math: We're back to our normal schedule next week, which means the start of unit 7! Unit 7 is super fun, and deals with concepts such as: coordinate grids, reading/writing expressions, and order of operations. SOME of the students will be bringing home a permission slip to take a placement test for Advanced Math next year. If a child places into Advanced Math, they would be taking 7th grade math in 6th grade. As this is a big step, we want to make sure your child is ready for it. There are 3 things they consider when places students in 7th grade math: placement test score, MAP score, and teacher recommendation. The paper that is going home is in regards to the placement test. Students do NOT have to take the placement test if they aren't interested in Advanced Math (which is why not all students will have a permission slip). I explained all this to the students, and only those interested took a permission slip. There is more information on the permission slip, so please look it over. Let me (Mrs. Bush) know if you have any questions. If your child didn't bring home a permission slip and you want them to take the placement test, let me know & I'll send one home with them.
Science: We are getting close to wrapping up our first investigation about Earth & Sun. For this investigation we focused specifically on how/why our shadows move, and what causes day/night. Expect a study guide to come home next week.
Reading: Our reading time has been choppy this week due to MSTEP testing. We were able to get a few lessons in regarding determing the lessons our stories teach us, and connecting them to themes from other stories we've read.
Language Arts: This week we took the English Language Arts M-Step so we didn't focus on our persuasive writing as much. We did have spelling and students had homework this week. They will also have it next week Tuesday and Thursday with a test on Friday.
Social Studies: This week we started learning about the events that led to the Revolutionary War.
